Washington has the 11th-highest tax burden in the U.S., with state and local tax collections of $4,408 per resident, according to a study released this week.
The nonprofit, nonpartisan Tax Foundation’s 2012 edition of “Facts and Figures: How Does Your State Compare?” ranks all 50 states on 37 measures of tax and fiscal policy. It’s available at Tax Foundation.
The average state and local tax burden across the country is $4,160 per capita, with Connecticut’s $7,256 per person burden the highest in the U.S. and Mississippi’s $2,678 ranking lowest.
“When state governments continue to face budget shortfalls, it’s vital that both lawmakers and taxpayers know where their states stand on key tax and spending measures,” Scott Drenkard, economist for the Tax Foundation and editor of “Facts and Figures,” said.
