Support an important cause: Grad night

It’s hard to believe it, but in just a few short months Camas and Washougal high school seniors will be preparing for the future as they reach one of the most significant milestones in their young lives so far — graduation.

And as the students are finishing up their course work, taking finals, making presentations for senior boards, and putting college and other post-graduation plans in place, many of their parents are working hard to make sure the celebration of this ultimate achievement is fun and safe.

Every year, parents spend the better part of the nine-month school year planning, fundraising and sweating through even the most minute details of the drug- and alcohol-free graduation night party for all seniors to attend. From plastic pink flamingo flocking to fireworks sales, rummage sales and pie sales, these moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas pull out all of the stops to raise the many thousands of dollars it takes to make this one special night happen.

This weekend one of those important fundraisers is taking place at Washougal High School. In conjunction with a WHS drama performance of “Inherit the Wind,” on Saturday the WHS Grad Night Committee will host a fundraiser that includes a silent auction, raffle and spaghetti feed in the commons from 5 to 8 p.m. All proceeds benefit the grad night party. The play begins at 7 p.m.

The drug- and alcohol-free grad night parties provide opportunities for our communities’ teens to celebrate their great achievements responsibly. It’s an effort that each and every one of us should stand up to support, and this weekend’s fundraiser is a great chance to do just that.
