Athlete of the week: Davin Gong

Mountain View senior Davin Gong has been voted at The Columbian’s high school athlete of the week for Jan. 20-25 based on a vote of fans on Facebook.

Gong collected 45.2 percent of the 660 votes cast this week to beat out fellow Mountain View student, boys basketball player Zach Torson. Torson collected 22.9 percent.

Gong won the 100-yard backstroke by three seconds in a state-qualifying time of 57.23 seconds at the Southwest Washington Invitational meet in Longview. He also finished third in the 100 butterfly at the meet.

He helped Mountain View swim to meet records and state-qualifying marks in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Other candidates were Mountain View girls bowler Alex Lanning, Hudson’s Bay wrester Aaron Blaine and Battle Ground girls basketball player Haley Grossman.
