I hope everyone had a great Christmas, although it always seems to come and go so quickly! And for you weather enthusiasts out there, I hope you got a weather gadget or two to play with (I did)!
Not too much to chat about in the weather department this week, nothing exciting for us but more clouds, showers and cool temperatures. Maybe some drier but foggy weather on tap for the weekend, but nothing exciting like the snow in Texas and what not. I will mention that on Christmas Day there were at least 28 tornadoes that touched down in the U.S., and that may go into the record books at the most ever on Christmas.
December has carried out the trend of greater-than-average rainfall, with more than 7.5 inches of rain as of midday Wednesday. That is 2 inches above average. Portland now has its second wettest year since record-keeping started at the airport in 1940.
And with December being one of our coldest months, it has dropped below freezing only twice at Pearson Field this month, and the average mean temperature is 43.3 degrees, 2.6 degrees above average. There still is no sign of an arctic outbreak and extended cold in the offing. Will we get by with only an occasional tease of snow here in the lowlands all winter? Who knows? January and February are prime months for snow and cold, so we still have a chance.
