A free collection event next month invites residents to recycle their unused electronics or block foam, perhaps left over from this year’s holiday gifts.
Participants can bring working or non-working electronics — though functioning equipment no more than five years old is preferred, according to Clark County Environmental Services. Televisions, computer monitors or microwaves will not be accepted, according to event organizers.
Block foam packaging must be clean and bagged or boxed to be accepted. That does not include yellow urethane foam, soft polypropylene foam, hot tub covers or packing peanuts, which will not be accepted, according to the county.
Local nonprofit Empower Up will accept the electronics and computers to refurbish for students and families in need. Portland-based Total Reclaim will grind and melt the block foam to be recycled.
The Jan. 5 event is open to Clark County residents only. Participants can bring items between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to Fisher’s Landing Transit Center, 3510 S.E. 164th Ave. in Vancouver.
