There were so many things in Idaho’s favor that Trent Cowan could not resist.
His parents both went to Idaho. His sister. His brother.
And now, Trent Cowan will become a Vandal, too.
Cowan, a senior from Union, made his decision last week to sign with Idaho football in February. He will be listed as an “athlete” and will likely play wide receiver or safety. His brother Bobby just finished his All-America career as a punter for the Vandals.
“They offered me way back when I was a junior,” Trent Cowan said. “They just got a new coach. (Paul Petrino) called me and said, ‘We still want you.’ They pretty much re-offered me.”
An assistant coach came to his house and they spoke for three hours about sports, life, and school.
Trent Cowan said that did it.
“At the end of that talk, I made up my mind this is where I wanted to go,” Cowan said.
His parents, Julie and David Cowan, attended the school. So did older sister Marissa.
Part of Trent’s reasoning is the challenge of playing for a struggling program. Idaho won one game this season.
“The coolest thing is being a part of something to turn it around,” Cowan said. “To help turn around a 1 and 11 team into a bowl contender would be the ultimate satisfaction. Having that opportunity would be special.”
Cowan, a 6-foot-3 athlete, was voted by the coaches to the first team on offense, defense and special teams for the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.
He was Union’s leading receiver and also a force in the running game as the quarterback in the Wildcat formation. He also excelled as a defensive back, and was named the top punter in the league.
Copp going to St. Martin’s — Union senior basketball standout Tyler Copp has signed to play college ball at St. Martin’s University in Lacey.
“Tyler comes from a well coached and successful program. He has a great court demeanor and has played with many good players. He also possesses good leadership skills,” said St. Martin’s coach Keith Cooper in a release from the university.
Copp is in his third season with the varsity team at Union. Last year, he helped the Titans finish third at the Class 4A state tournament.
Copp signed his letter of intent in November.
