Marquis Evans did not mind at all that Tim Hergert was being denied pretty much all game. Evans was not bothered when Hergert was double-teamed every time he touched the ball Friday night.
That just gave him more opportunities.
“We have three primary scorers,” said Evans, a senior from Heritage. “If one is locked down, it’s up to the others to step up. That’s what we did tonight.”
Evans made six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points, leading Heritage to its first boys basketball win of the season. The Timberwolves held off a late charge from Fort Vancouver for a 59-57 non-league victory.
“This feels great. It’s a great accomplishment,” Evans said. “I told my team I’d try my best to help us win. I stepped up and knocked some big shots down for the team.”
Evans made 11 of 18 from the floor, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range. He scored 11 points in the third quarter, then connected on back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth to give the Timberwolves (1-4) an 11-point lead.
Fort Vancouver (2-3) would score the next nine points to make it 53-51 with 3:40 to play.
Heritage, though, would not relinquish the lead as both teams got defensive. Fort Vancouver would not score on its next eight possessions, all within two or three points.
Evans made his final shot of the night with 36 seconds to play to make it 56-51. Heritage’s Jeffrey Bersh would knock down two free throws with 22 seconds left to make it 58-52.
Fort’s Deonte Hawkins would respond with two free throws. Hergert made one for Heritage, and then Fort’s Matt Delisle hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to make it 59-57. The Timberwolves would miss their free throws, but Delisle’s shot at the buzzer to tie bounced off the rim.
“We pulled through,” Evans said. “I’m proud of my team.”
Loris Hervey and Will Doty each scored 11 for Fort Vancouver. Doty also had 12 rebounds. Tre Eisenhut and Delisle added 10 points.
Hergert, who had scored 25 and 31 points in his previous games, was held to nine points against Fort’s defense.Hergert did have six steals to try to offset a tough shooting night. David Martin added eight points and five assists for the Timberwolves.
