Compost site given boost by volunteers

Old Evergreen Highway — Thanks to the hard work of 41 volunteers, Columbia Springs’ composting demonstration site is back in full force after falling into disrepair. The helpers, many from the United Church of Christ in Vancouver, were taking part Nov. 10 in Columbia Springs’ ongoing Stewardship Saturdays, held six times a year. It takes a lot of work to maintain the 100-acre environmental education center, said Columbia Springs Volunteer Coordinator Mariah Acton, making the regular efforts of unpaid, but dedicated, helpers vital. “The power of volunteers is absolutely incredible,” Acton said. The Master Composting/Recycler Program demonstration site is funded by the Clark County Department of Environmental Services, but administered through Columbia Springs. The site is used to exhibit composting methods to promote waste reduction. If you’d like to help at future volunteer days email volunteer@columbiasprings.org. The next Stewardship Saturday is set for Feb. 19, 2013.
