Northwest Natural Gas Co. has filed a request with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission for rate reductions for its customers in Southwest Washington.

If approved, Southwest Washington residential rates would drop by about 9 percent, and commercial rates would decrease by about 9.5 percent. The decreases would take effect Nov. 1.

A residential customer using 55 therms a month would see an average monthly bill decrease of $5.62. A commercial customer using 233 therms a month would see an average monthly bill decrease of $23.92.

Surging domestic gas supplies are part of the reason for the rate reductions. Over the past four years, rates for Southwest Washington customers of NW Natural have decreased by about 35 percent.
