Police identify victim, driver in fatal crash

Vancouver police on Friday identified the people involved in a fatal crash near Esther Short Park on Thursday.

Liren Fue, 86, of Vancouver was crossing West Eighth Street on a motorized scooter when he was hit by a pickup driven by Wayne Ormand Vaudrey, 22, also of Vancouver, police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said in a news release.

The crash happened just after 7 p.m. in a crosswalk leading to the park where the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival’s Jazz Education Night concert was under way. Witnesses reported Vaudrey got out of the pickup and performed CPR on Fue.

Vancouver Fire Department Capt. David James said paramedics who arrived on scene determined the man could not be saved.

James said the driver of the pickup remained on scene and cooperated with authorities.

“It (stopping and doing CPR) was the right thing to do,” said Capt. Kevin Murray, a fire department spokesman. “It was certainly the responsible thing to do.”

Murray has responded to 10 or 15 fatal crashes in his career and doesn’t remember another one where the driver stopped and performed CPR.

“We always appreciate people helping but helping when it’s appropriate,” he said.

Firefighters suggest people be careful not to add to the problem.

More details on the cause of the crash were not available Friday.
