Community notes: CCYF jamboree includes food drive

Clark County Youth Football and the Titans Youth Foundation will hold a food drive on Saturday during the CCYF Jamboree at Kiggins Bowl in Vancouver.

All CCYF teams have been challenged to collect food. Teams that collect more than 1,500 pounds of food will earn pizza from Pied Piper Pizza for their end-of-season party.

Players and fans also may donate money at the gate toward the food drive.

Nolan Henry, a sophomore at Union High School, is organizing the fourth-annual food drive. He said the goal is to surpass the 34,000 pounds of food collected during this event in 2011.

Clark County Youth Football has teams for players in grades 2-8. The jamboree is the kickoff for the 30th CCYF season. Games are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

As part of the food drive, several businesses and individuals have donated prizes for a raffle that will help raise funds to buy food for needy individuals in Clark County. Former University of Oregon and current St. Louis Rams quarterback Kellen Clemens has donated NFL memorabilia to the raffle. Rose City Packing and Printing of Vancouver has supplied boxes to pack the food. Athletes First and State Farm Insurance Agent Julie Moe are other key supporters of the food drive, according to Henry.

Golfer wins in Salem

Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver won his age division of the Salem City Junior Championship golf tournament, which concluded on Aug. 14 at Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Ore.

Tibbits, 13, won the 12-13 age group with a 36-hole score of 152, completing each day at 4-over 76 to finish eight strokes in front of runner up Andrew Eyre of Salem.

Brian Humphreys of Washougal took fourth in the division for boys ages 14-15, finishing with a 9-over-par 153 for the two-day event.

Diego De La Torre of Brush Prairie took eighth place among boys ages 16-17, finishing at 10-over 154,

Teenagers win Salmon Creek runs

David Klinginsmith of Longview was the champion of Saturday’s 14-kilometer course of the Salmon Creek Sunset Runs. The 18-year-old completed an 8.66-mile loop that started and finished at the Salmon Creek Pizza Schmizza restaurant in 53 minutes and 15 seconds.

Micah Rice, 35, of Vancouver took second place eight seconds behind Klinginsmith. Ben Chase, 27, of Vancouver was third, two minutes behind Rice. Katy Weatherley of Battle Ground was the 14-kilometer women’s champion. The 31-year-old finished in 1 hour, 7 minutes and 28 seconds. Michelle Savigny, 34, of Battle Ground was second in 1:10:01 and Debbie Azurin , 43, of Vancouver placed third in 1:13:07.

The 14-K loop included the Salmon Creek Trail and the Bliss Road hill on the return to the finish line.

Stephen Bottoms of Onalaska won the 8-kilometer race. The 17-year-old finished the 5-mile out and back course with a time of 29:56.

Selena Moffitt, 37, from Gresham was the 8-kilometer women’s champion. Claudia Cardenas, 36, of Vancouver was the second woman to finish the 8-K (40:11).

Special Olympians excel

Three golfers from Clark County Special Olympics won gold medals during a Special Olympics Washington regional tournament in July at Tacoma’s Meadow Park Golf Course.

Playing for the Chippers team, James Carter, Larry Mathews and Unified Partner Colin Wilcox each won gold medals. Michael Abe and Calvin Ertler won bronze medals at the golf tournament, and Jeremy Haliski won a fourth-place ribbon.

Also in late July, three Clark County softball teams won gold in their divisions at the Southwest Washington regional tournament for Special Olympics. The Cardinals, the Pirates and the Reds qualified for the state tournament, along with five members of the Clark County Rockies for individual skills.

Playing for the Cardinals were James Byers, Tina Colantuono, Cole Gaddis, Mallory Hamilton, Glenda Huhtala, Dusty Lang, Charlie Malik-Byers, Greg Martino, Charles Rymer. The Cardinals were coached by Teresa Haliski and Emily Hamilton.

Playing for the Pirates were Cedric Armstrong, Dianna Bartusek, Jeremy Beer, Beth Descloux, Jeremy Descloux, Zacharius Descloux, Benford Jeni, Kristi Klingenmier, Phillip Klover, Peter Li, Ashley Medlock, Jennifer Moscou, David Nelson, Natalie Raylance, Tim Rogers, Isaac Shetler and Richard William Pirates coaches were Amanda Johnson, Andrea Medlock, Jeff Wilkes, Aaron Medlock and Olivia Salazar.

Playing for the Reds were Michael Cook, Dennis Dole, Jr., Nathan Ellis, Santos Lopez, Sam McIntyre, Levo Neil, Alberto Rivera, Cory Robak, Ivan Soltero, Sean Starr, Andrew Stekhuizen and Michael Vanoni. Coaching the Reds were Bryan Cook, Audrey Stekhuizen, Christopher Stekhuizen, and Katie Kaiser.

Individual skills goal medal winners from the Rockies were David Balas, Krista Downey, Rebekah Galliher and Karen Hilby. The Rockies coach was Sylvia Downey.

Other Clark County teams in the Southwest Washington softball tournament were the Cubs (second place), the Royals (third place), the Braves (fourth), the Mariners (fourth place), and the Huskies (fifth).

Baseball tryout on Sunday

Vancouver Cardinals Baseball Club will begin preparing for the 2013 summer season with a tryout session at 11 a.m. on Sunday at the Clark College baseball field.

The tryouts for the Vancouver Cardinals and the Vancouver Redbirds are open to all Clark County high school baseball players.

There is no charge to try out. Players should bring all essential baseball equipment to the tryout.

The Cardinals have fielded teams of players from Southwest Washington for three decades. They travel throughout the Pacific Northwest and play about 50 games each summer. The Redbirds play fewer games and are part of the local Senior Babe Ruth Baseball league.

Running series hits finish line

The Clark County Running Club’s annual series of summer Wednesday runs comes to a close this week. The final event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and is a out-and-back run that covers three miles along the Waterfront Trail that begins and ends at Marine Park.

The race starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by the end-of-series picnic.
