Military historian Jefferson Davis will discuss the U.S. Army’s 104th Division from World War II to the global war on terrorism, including its ties to the Vancouver Barracks, at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Vancouver Visitor Center, 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd.
The retired Army major will discuss how the soldiers of the 104th Division — the Timberwolves — served in World War II. They saw action in the Netherlands, and on the edges of the Battle of the Bulge, and liberated a concentration camp.
In 1945, the U.S. quickly disbanded its military. Within a few months, the need for a standing Army became apparent. It included a large force of Army Reservists and National Guard soldiers. One of the units chosen for reactivation was the 104th Division. It was headquartered at Vancouver Barracks until 2011.
There is no admission fee. Occupancy is limited to 70 people; seating is first-come, first-served. The Visitor Center is opposite the east end of Officers Row.
