Oregon State Police on Monday released the name of a man hit and killed by a Vancouver driver on Interstate 205 in Oregon.

Eric Douglas Faircloth, 38, and his dog were killed around 3 a.m. Sunday after being hit in the northbound lanes on the north end of the Clackamas River Bridge near Gladstone. Faircloth is believed to be a transient with no recent known address, Oregon State Police said.

Albert J. Carness, 65, of Vancouver told police he was driving his Toyota Camry northbound through a curve when he hit something in the left lane, according to a police news bulletin. He stopped and realized he hit a man who was holding a dog.

Faircloth and the dog were dead when troopers arrived.

Carness was not reported injured.

According to the news release, it’s unknown if this was a deliberate act by the victim.

OSP troopers are continuing the investigation with the Clackamas County Medical Examiner’s Office.
