Jocelyn Adams promises she will take her time.
She said there is no need to rush back from a severe knee injury, not even to try to defend a state basketball championship.
Adams, a junior-to-be at Skyview, had surgery July 27 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. She injured the knee in a summer tournament in June.
Adams, who scored 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting and also grabbed 10 rebounds in the Class 4A state championship game in March, said she was told to expect rehabilitation to take at least six months. That would mean a return to the court in January.
“I’m not going to rush anything,” Adams said. “I’m going to make sure I’m healthy all the way so I don’t get another tear.”
Her family has plenty of experience dealing with knee injuries. Jocelyn’s older sister, Lanae, endured three ACL surgeries during her career with Prairie.
“I wanted to be like my sister,” Jocelyn Adams said with a smile Wednesday, gracefully balancing on crutches with her repaired knee in a brace, still swollen from the procedure.
Adams said she will be at every game, cheering on her teammates in the early part of the 2012-13 season. If she progresses, with no setbacks, and if she is confident, she is willing to get back on the court toward the end of the regular season.
If not, she said she will return for the 2013 summer tournament schedule and prepare for her senior year.
Schoonover moves to AD at Battle Ground
A shakeup at the top of Battle Ground athletics will mean a shakeup with the boys basketball program.
Andy Schoonover is leaving coaching for administration.
Schoonover, the head coach since the 2006-07 season, is taking over for Karla Kalian as Battle Ground’s athletic director. Kalian is reportedly taking another position within the district.
Schoonover said he loved his time with the basketball team, and he is grateful to remain part of the program, but now as the person in charge of all Battle Ground athletics.
He told his players of the change Wednesday morning. The next step is finding a replacement for himself
“My hope is to get it done quick,” Schoonover said. “My guess is it will be the school year before it all gets complete.”
