Slumping sales have tolled the final days for the Chevys Fresh Mex restaurant that has operated since 1995 at 4315 N.E. Thurston Way near Westfield Vancouver mall.

About 44 full- and part-time employees of the restaurant were offered severance packages or jobs at other locations, said Rick Van Warner, a spokesman for Real Mex, owner of the Chevys chain. Cypress, Calif.-based Real Mex also operates El Charrito and El Acapulco restaurant chains.

Chevys is the third restaurant to close in the area around Vancouver Plaza, a retail center near the mall that has been plagued by tenant vacancies since anchor store WinCo Foods left in 2008.

Other restaurant closures nearby included T.G.I. Friday’s and upscale seafood restaurant Newport Bay.
