A team from Union High School placed second overall in the Washington Science Olympiad state tournament, held April 14 at Eastern Washington University. The finish earned the Union team an invitation to the National Science Olympiad Tournament to be held next month in Orlando, Fla.

The 19 science students from the high school in the Evergreen school district racked up top five finishes in 13 of the 23 events and won three gold medals.

Science Olympiads feature questions on physics, chemistry, Earth-space science, biology and engineering. The questions fall into either “building” or “studying” events, both of which require much preparation over the entire school year.

Team members are: seniors Minerva Zhou, Catherine Nguyen, David Orchard, Kaylee Brent, Ricky Lee and Erica Tran; juniors Trevor Schauer, Emma Herbeck, Nathan So, Steven Tsai and Katie Hong; sophomore Crystal Lee; and freshmen Victor Chang, Eric Hou, Susan Zou, Daniel Rodricks, Brian Hong, Christina Chow and Michelle Ton.
