The Portland Timbers on Wednesday bolstered their back line with the addition of Scottish defender Steven Smith.
An outside back, Smith played nine seasons in Scotland and England. Now 26, he started his career with Scotland’s Rangers FC, where he played in 55 matches over seven seasons. He has played in both UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches.
He will officially be added to the Timbers’ roster when his International Transfer Certificate is received by Major League Soccer. Terms of the deal were not released.
Also on Wednesday, the Timbers released midfielder James Marcelin. Marcelin, 25, joined the Timbers’ second-division club in 2010 and was among the players retained when the franchise joined MLS in 2011. He appeared in 23 matches, including three this season, with the MLS club.
