Fashion program comes to Skills Center

The Clark County Skills Center has a new program for current high school sophomores and juniors now enrolling for fall 2012.

Fashion Merchandising and Management will teach students the fundamentals of the fashion industry including product development, customer service, buying and selling, marketing, product display, merchandising and achieving a profit.

They also learn aspects of project and human resources management to obtain a holistic understanding of the wholesale and retail fashion industries. Students may also qualify for national professional certification in customer service provided by the National Retail Federation Foundation.

The program need is driven by Washington Employment Security Department research that projects growth in this occupational area through 2019, according to a press release.

Jobs and careers developed by this program are in demand now and will continue to be in demand for at least the next seven years.

Program instructor Pam Archer has developed, implemented and taught fashion merchandising at the Skills Center and Clark College; established internships and industry contacts for Skills Center students; and held retail sales and management positions with Macy’s, Nordstrom and Norm Thompson Outfitters.

For more information, contact Archer, Dean of Instruction Margaret Rice and/or Director Dennis Kampe at 604-1050.

The Skills Center opened in the fall of 1983. It is owned and operated by 10 southwest Washington school districts, including Camas and Washougal, providing technical and professional training programs to prepare Clark County high school and college students for the workforce.
