Marion County Deputies were called to the intersection of Yergen Road NE and Olmstead Road NE at 12:59pm, April 17th.
Deputy David Wagner arrived at 1:04pm, and found the victim of the crash still in her 2004 Honda Civic. She was identified as Susan Ely, 67, of Newberg. The car suffered major damage. A representative from the Medical Examiner’s Office came to the scene to assist in the investigation.
Wagner’s preliminary investigation revealed that Ely was traveling westbound on Olmstead Road near the intersection of Yergen Road when she lost control of her car and drove off the shoulder. In an attempt to recover, she overcorrected and drove back across the eastbound lanes and was struck on the driver’s side of her car by a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado truck, traveling eastbound. Ely was trapped in her car and died at the scene. She was wearing her seatbelt, and her vehicle’s airbag did deploy.
The driver of the truck was identified as Ross Dumdi, 32, of Yamhill. Dumdi was not injured in the crash. His truck’s airbags deployed and he was wearing a seatbelt.
The intersection was reopened around 3:00pm. Neither vehicle carried a passenger. Deputy Wagner’s investigation is ongoing. Photos from the scene are attached.
