Weather Eye: Weekend may be warm, dry before clouds return Monday

It is looking quite likely that we might get a third nice weekend in a row, with high temperatures reaching 70 or more under mostly sunny skies from the coast to the mountains. Sunday might be the warmest day of the weekend, before clouds increase and showers return by Monday.

We could all get used to rainy days and Mondays with dry weekends, that’s for sure.

Mark your calendar for another weather event. The Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorology Society will have its May meeting from 10 a.m. to noon May 12 at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. The meeting is free and open to the public. Cliff Mass, author and professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, will speak on “The Future of Northwest Weather Prediction.”

I met Mass a number of years ago when my daughter was attending his classes at UW in Seattle. He has a wonderful weather blog: Cliff Mass Weather Blog.

His blog entry Monday focused on what time of day it rains the most. In the cool season, he said it rains most frequently between 6 a.m. and noon. In the summer, it is most likely to fall between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m.

The La Niña pattern we’re experiencing –which typically brings wetter-than-usual conditions in our area — is on the way out and should be completely gone in the next two months. Hopefully, we get a warm, pleasant summer, and La Niña stays away for a couple of years.

I had a frost early Monday morning, before the clouds and rain rolled in. It was not too heavy, but the rooftops were white in places.
