Portland-based Fred Meyer plans to build a new store in Lynden in Whatcom County near the Canadian border.

The company is acquiring 16 acres of undeveloped property on the north side of town. Fred Meyer intends to build a full-service 170,000-square-foot store.

The new site also will have a Fred Meyer gas station and other retail spaces, including a 6,000-square-foot space that could be developed as a separate building in the parking lot. Once built, the store will employ about 250 people, said Melinda Merrill, a spokeswoman for the company.

Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. owns Fred Meyer, which operates eight stores in Clark County.
