What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:
For all the golfers who played the Masters and felt they had a shot at the green jacket, there was one who did not.
Sergio Garcia thinks the only major title he’ll ever have is this: best player never to win one.
Garcia told Spanish reporters after a dismal third round at the Masters that he does not think he is capable of winning a major, and he did not back off the comments Sunday.
“Everything I say, I say it because I feel it,” he said. “If I didn’t mean it, I couldn’t stand here and lie like a lot of the guys do. If I felt like I could win, I would do it. Unfortunately at the moment, unless I get really lucky in one of the weeks, I can’t really play much better than I played this week. And I’m going to finish 13th or 15th. What does that show you?”
We had the Opening Series.
We had Opening Night.
We had Opening Day.
And now we just finished Opening Weekend.
Major League Baseball did its TV best to mess up what was once nearly a national holiday — the true Opening Day experience when all teams started the season on the same day in April.
Instead, 2012 gave you a strung out opening experience.
There’s something very wrong when your opening night teams — Marlins and Cardinals — played only that night and then jetted out of town for their weekend series against someone else.
Thank you, TV money. We hope the ratings were worthy of all that.
Certainly you missed this: The United States Davis Cup team beat France … in France. … on red clay.
Davis Cup tennis is not on anyone’s radar, but for American tennis players, this is kinda huge.
John Isner with two wins, and Bob and Mike Bryan winning in doubles, shows that American tennis is not quite dead yet despite recent Grand Slam results.
Now, win at Spain in the semifinal round in September and we might really have something worth watching.
