• Backyard composting: This free workshop includes classroom introduction to composting science and a visit to a composting demonstration site. Workshops will be from 6 to 8 p.m. April 19 at Columbia Springs, 12208 S.E. Evergreen Highway, or 10 a.m. to noon May 12 at the Center for Agriculture, Science and Environmental Education, room 202, 11104 N.E. 149th St., Brush Prairie.
• Introduction to vermicomposting (red worms): This $35 class covers the basics of using redworms to turn kitchen food scraps into black gold for the garden. Participants will receive worms and a bin and will learn how to prepare worm bedding. The class will be from 10 a.m. to noon May 19 at Columbia Springs or from 10 a.m. to noon June 16 at CASEE. Registration and $35 payment per bin and worms is required at least one week before class to receive the worms.
