Vancouver school employees rally before board meeting

School professionals supported by teachers

Vancouver school workers and teachers have scheduled a rally Tuesday afternoon to protest a contract for the district’s support professionals.

Members of the Vancouver Association of Education Support Professionals, which represents more than 600 clerical staff, school secretaries, tech assistants and paraprofessionals, will gather at 4 p.m. at the Robert C. Bates Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Road.

They will be joined by teachers from the Vancouver Education Association. The board meeting starts at 5:15 p.m.

The protest follows last week’s 82.4 percent vote of “no-confidence” in the leadership of the school district.

About 1,800 ballots were distributed to 600 VAESP members and 1,200 teachers in the VEA; 972 were returned A total of 414 ballots were received from VAESP members, who cast 359 no-confidence votes (86.7 percent). VEA members returned 558 ballots, with 442 teachers (79.2 percent) backing the no-confidence vote.
