Prep football: Columbia River 36, Hockinson 22

“The Big Play” was critical in Columbia River’s 36-22 victory over Hockinson on Friday.

Clayton Frank threw for 237 yards on 8 completions, including one to Eli Evenson for 90 yards and another to Chuck Thomas for 84 yards.

Remick Kawawaki started slow, getting only one carry in the first half. His first half performance was only a brief lapse, as he would rush eight times in the second half for 123 yards, finishing with two touchdowns.

“Remick is just a big, strong kid who makes a lot of yards on his after initial contact,” Columbia River coach John O’Rourke said.

Hockinson was not without its own large gains, as Nick Guinett, seeing his first action of the year after joining the team late, had a 95 yard kickoff return to spark the second half offensive outburst.

Guinett also added two receiving touchdowns, one for 53 yards and another for 18 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Hockinson added a chip shot field goal to take a 3-0 lead early in the second quarter.

The score remained the same until Frank tossed his 90 yard pass to Evenson to take the 7-3 lead and the momentum into the second half.

What momentum River found was quickly squandered away, as Guinett ran back the opening kickoff to begin the second half for a touchdown and to take a 10-7 lead.

The Chieftains would respond with a 51-yard run by Kawawaki, reclaiming the lead at 14-10.

Hockinson would not falter, however, as Doug MacDonald threw his first touchdown of the day to Guinett. The kick was missed, but the Hawks had the lead, 16-14, with just over 10 minutes to play.

Three minutes later, Columbia River answered with yet another touchdown from Frank to take the lead again, 21-16 with seven and a half minutes remaining.

Hockinson would be forced to punt, and, three plays later, Frank threw his 84 yard bomb to Thomas. Kawawaki would convert on a run, giving the Chieftains a seemingly overwhelming 29-16 lead.

The Hawks were aware of the score, yet regained their composure and scored quickly on a fourth and eleven pass to Guinett, bringing the score to 29-22.

Three plays later, Kawawaki would seal the deal and run in his second touchdown of the day for 26 yards, finalizing the score at 36-22.

What seemed like would be a defensive oriented game turned into an offensive, back and forth shootout with both quarterbacks completing clutch passes down the stretch.

O’Rourke’s offense was stuck in neutral in the first quarter, gaining only 6 yards.

The defense looked out of sync as well, giving up multiple penalties that allowed for Hockinson’s offense to move the ball at will.

“I think we were trying to figure out, even into the third quarter, we only had 28 plays. You couple that with the penalties, we weren’t able to get anything going,” O’Rourke said. “But the kids turned it around and were able to make a couple big plays, especially on offense.”
