Lakes 49, Evergreen 6

It was evident Evergreen was overmatched before the game started at McKenzie Stadium.

The Plainsmen, loaded with sophomore and junior talent, are primed for the future of 4A football.

Lakes High School on the other hand, has been overpowering 3A competition for years, consistently being ranked in the top 5 in the state.

Evergreen’s first drive gave Lakes a chance to showcase their dominance. After Anthony Thomas’ second pass of the game was intercepted, Lakes ran the ball three times for 29 yards and the first score of the game.

Two and a half minutes later, the Plainsmen fumbled the ball and Lakes put another 7 on the board.

This trend would continue, with Evergreen turning the ball over six times in the first quarter, all of which resulting in Lakes touchdowns, giving them an overwhelming 42-0 lead.

LeVonte Littlejohn ran for four of the six touchdowns, using his speed and Evergreen’s lack of experience to his advantage.

As time expired going to the second half however, the home team got on the board with Jared Telles pounding in a 10 yard run for a touchdown.

The kick was blocked, giving the Lancers a 49-6 lead going into the second half.

The score remained unchanged the rest of the way, each team unable to initiate another scoring drive.

Evergreen could get nothing going against the Lancers’ defense, with the offense combining for 82 yards the entire contest.

Much of the reason for that was due to Lakes’ star lineman, Zach Banner, who is ranked as the second best football player in the state and is entertaining offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama and Oregon, along with at least 25 others.

Thomas finished 3 of 18 for 48 yards passing, but many opportunities were missed. Four of his passes were dropped, some of which were potential big gains.

Brady Weir was unable to play the second half with an apparent right leg injury, needing teammates to help him to their bench. Jesse Saulo also sat out the second half, suffering from a reported concussion.
