WASHOUGAL — The Washougal Panthers overcame a flurry of yellow flags against them to win in dominating fashion Friday night.

Washougal gained 451 yards of offense to offset their 10 penalties, taking down visiting Hudson’s Bay 41-9.

“It was great to come out here and show what we can really do,” Washougal quarterback Colton Sullivan said. “Credit for the pass yards really should go to our wide receivers as well as our offensive line. They all played great and really held their own.”

Washougal’s defense held the Eagles to 182 yards, all rushing.

“I’m glad we were able to bring some success to this school and this town,” Washougal coach Bob Jacobs said. “These guys played hard, and Hudson’s Bay is a big, physical football team.”

Washougal’s Caleb Howard had all three first-half touchdowns as the Panthers jumped out to a 20-7 lead.

“We have good running backs, and they played really well tonight,” Jacobs said of Howard, Stephen Camden and Austin Tofell. “I’m proud of them.”

Tofell led the Panthers with 116 yards on 12 carries. Howard finished with 98 yards, while Camden recorded 41 yards with a touchdown.

With their confidence on the rise from the first half, the Panthers then dominated the second half.

Sam O’Hara kicked two field goals in the second half, including one from an impressive 43 yards.

Sullivan found Karsten Short for a 29-yard touchdown pass, and Camden found the end zone from four yards out, capping the scoring for Washougal.

“We had a great game,” Tofell said. “Everyone stuck to their assignments, and in the end we came out victorious.”

Hudson’s Bay quarterback Emilio Alcantar rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown to lead the Eagles.

Washougal will will try to get to 2-0 with a game against White Salmon next week.

“Every week is different, and we don’t underestimate anybody,” Jacobs said. “We just need to continue to do what we do best.”
