Rose Village — Creativity, originality and the ability to scare a crow were judging criteria at the first-ever scarecrow contest held in conjunction with Vancouver’s annual Old Apple Tree Festival, held this year on Oct. 1.
It was more fun than fright as the ambitious straw men strutted their stuff. First place went to the Carstensen family of Rose Village for their very creative “Jeckleton.” The Barber family took second place with “Russell Up Some Grub.” And “Jack Straw,” by the Buchanan family, won third place with a 1970s-inspired dude named “Jack Straw.”
A total of eight scarecrows were on display.
The festival was sponsored by the Urban Forestry Commission and the scarecrow contest was under the purview of the Vancouver Watersheds Alliance.
