Nick Huff, Diego De La Torre and Jarred Gomez each finished in the top 10 as Hockinson captured the team title at the Class 2A District IV golf championships Tuesday at The Home Course in DuPont.
Huff shot 78 on Tuesday after an opening-round 71 for a 149 total and fourth place, seven strokes back.
De La Torre shot back-to-back rounds of 76 to place fifth at 152, and Gomez shot 83 for a 178 total good for ninth place.
Individual medalist honors went to Brady Calkins of W.F. West High School, who shot 142. Hockinson edged W.F. West 133-132 in the points system for the team title. Most importantly, the Hawks’ top three finishers advanced to the Class 2A state tournament to be held in May.
“I’m very pleased,” Hockinson coach Dennis DeWitt said. “I think if you ask any of the guys, I don’t think anybody would say he played particularly well, which is a good thing. I mean, it’s not a good thing that they didn’t play well, but it’s good that they don’t feel like they played well but we still had enough team points to pull off the title. You want a strong finish and then look forward to state, which won’t happen until spring.”
Washougal’s Beau Scott finished with a two-round score of 155 to place fifth and advance to state. Also advancing was Woodland’s Trey Udy, who placed 11th at 161.
Johnson leads 1A golf — Ridgefield’s Brett Johnson, the defending state 1A champion, shot a 4-under-par 68 Tuesday to capture the 1A district golf championship at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis.
Johnson finished with a 2-under 142 to win by 11th strokes over Ross Kukula of Ilwaco. Also advancing to state was Ridgefield’s Taylor Konkright (166), Cory Smetzler (172), Dan Hettman (174) and Declan Daley (176), as well as La Center’s Derick Rivers (173) and Zach Brown (173).
