Prairie’s Seitz makes up for lost time vs. Bay

BATTLE GROUND — Prairie quarterback Colin Seitz said that having to miss a pair of games because of a concussion made for two of the longest weeks of his life.

In his return Friday, he saw to it that Hudson’s Bay players had one of the longest nights of theirs.

Completing 16 of his 21 attempts, the senior threw for 431 yards and seven touchdown passes in a 58-0 win over the Eagles. Oh, and he didn’t play in the second half.

One could use a number of superlatives to describe Seitz’s performance in the 3A Greater St. Helen’s League game, but perhaps teammate Ansel Cecil said it best when he quipped “he was money.”

Seitz did not disagree.

“I’ve never felt that on-target in my life,” said Seitz, who suffered a concussion against Fort Vancouver in Week 4. “I was so focused. I’d been waiting so long to get back on the field that I was like ‘I’m not screwing anything up.’ ”

Prairie (4-3, 3-2 in league) went 1-1 in its two games without Seitz, but its offense was hardly potent.

But on Friday, the Falcons scored 37 seconds into the game when Seitz tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Zalk to go up 6-0.

He and Zalk would connected again minutes later, this time on a 60-yard TD reception to take a 13-point lead. Then, Ansel Cecil got in on the action, catching a 19-yard scoring pass from Seitz near the end of the first quarter.

The pattern continued in the second, Seitz throwing a 38-yard scoring pass to Cecil, a 68-yard toss to David Taylor, a 9-yard bullet to Taylor, and a 57-yard screen pass to Jesse Zalk, who finished the night with nine receptions, three TD catches and 197 receiving yards.

Bay coach Mike Funderburg, as you might imagine, wasn’t pleased.

“It’s easy when your secondary can’t cover anyone,” said Funderburg whose team dropped to 0-7 on the season. “Our secondary has been bad all year. That’s just the reality.”

Prairie coach Terry Hyde, whose players sang “Happy Birthday” to him after the game, praised both his quarterback and blocking. He added that Seitz has the freedom to call his own plays and “is so intelligent” that the coaching staff trusts him. Taylor added 139 receiving yards for Prairie while Cecil racked up 86.
