Talking Points: Fans’ apathy should concern NBA

Sports fans, think back a few months to the NFL lockout.

Remember those dreary days?

Most of us figured it would end in time for games to be played on scheduled.

Yet, we, as a fan base, were a little worried. It lasted a little longer than anticipated and it got a little nasty, the war of words between the players and the owners.

Then we all had that collective sigh of relief. Football was saved.

We bring this up to compare what happened this summer, weeks before the first NFL regular-season games, and now in the NBA.

The NBA just cancelled the first two weeks of the regular season.

And you know what? Nobody cares. Well, somebody does, but collectively, no, we just don’t care.

Dan Patrick’s radio show had a poll question regarding the cancellation of those two weeks of games: Does it greatly concern you, or does it not concern you at all? Some 88 percent said it did not concern them at all.

That should concern the NBA.

Perhaps the players and the owners need each other more because it appears we fans do not need them. At least not until February, after football season ends.

Indianapolis.

New Orleans.

New York.

Phoenix.

Where would you like to be in February?

Well, New York is awesome any time of the year because, you know, it’s the city that never sleeps.

New Orleans is fun because of Bourbon Street and the French Quarter.

Phoenix is warm and has a lot of golf courses.

Indianapolis? In February? Heck, Indianapolis, at any time? No thanks.

Those are the sites of the next four Super Bowls.

So for you Seahawk fans, no reason to even hope you get to the Super Bowl this season. It’s in Indy. Wait until next year, or the year after that.

Remember, Seattle fans: Your first and only Super Bowl appearance was in Detroit, for crying out loud. No need to go to another Midwest city not named Chicago in the winter.
