Battle Ground — Bob Mortimer, who lost both legs and one arm in an auto wreck years ago, tells students, “I’m not handicapped.”

During an assembly at Maple Grove Middle School on Sept. 27, Mortimer told students what real handicaps are, including low self esteem, prejudice, failure to show respect and not standing up against bullying or teasing. Mortimer encouraged the students to be all they can be and not fall victim to peer pressure.

Mortimer teaches by example. He and his family completed their second bicycle trip across the United States this year. You can check out the journey at his website Hope And Courage Across America, http://www.hcjourney.org.
