The city of Vancouver fire marshal is looking for Fire Corps volunteers.

The fire department started a Fire Corps program to help respond to increasing demands and to provide services to the community.

The program provides resources for departments to use volunteers in nonemergency roles to help develop, implement and sustain programs to help meet the needs of the community.

Interested volunteers need to be at least 16 years old and complete an online application and training that includes: CPR, use of an automated external defibrillator, basic first aid practices, home hazard identification and fire safety practices.

Volunteers will provide a variety of services.

“We’re looking at really trying to educate the community about fire safety,” said Heidi Scarpelli, fire marshal with Vancouver.

The department hopes to have 25 volunteers before the first training academy, which should happen early next year, Scarpelli said. So far about 10 people have signed up.
