YAKIMA — Not knowing what to expect from the team on the other side of the net may have been Seton Catholic’s biggest advantage.

The Cougars won both their volleyball matches 3-0 Friday at the Class 1B tournament to reach the championship semifinals Saturday.

Seton defeated Crescent of Joyce 25-10, 25-17, 26-24, and followed that with a quarterfinal win over Thorp 25-11, 25-12, 25-18.

“Since we had not seen these teams, we didn’t know what to expect,” Seton coach Kelly Adams said. “We played calm and did our job.”

Adams said the key to victory was a strong service game, a strong serve-receive game, and setters putting up a good offense.

Brynn Letang played two monster games with a combined five kills, 15 digs, 15 aces, 41 service points and 36 assists.

Next for Seton Catholic is a 1 p.m. semifinal match against Colton. The winner will face either Tekoa-Oakesdale or Christian Faith in the championship at 7 p.m. The losing teams play for third place at 5 p.m.

1A tournament — Ridgefield stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 3-0 win over Overlake of Redmond.

The Spudders face Naches Valley in the seventh-place semifinal at 9 a.m. Saturday. A win and the Spudders would play at 3 p.m. for a trophy against either Montesano or Chelan.

Ridgefield started the tournament with tough 3-0 loss to Lynden Christian. Scores were 25-15, 27-25, 30-28.

Against Overlake, the Spudders prevailed 25-17, 25-15, 25-9.
