Another major Little League tournament is coming to Vancouver.
The Little League Junior Baseball Western Regional will be played at Hudson’s Bay High School’s Propstra Stadium beginning next summer.
Junior Baseball is the Little League division for the 13-14 age group.
The tournament will bring 11 state championship teams to town for up to a week. Dates have not been finalized, but the tournament will take place in late July or early August. The champion will advance to the Junior Baseball World Series in Taylor, Mich.
Mike Ray, the administrator for Washington District 4, said the hope is to position Vancouver to eventually host a World Series tournament for one of the Little League divisions. The Junior Baseball Western Regional is one of the larger regional Little League tournaments and had been held in Southern California.
In addition to the 11 state championship teams, a local host team representing District 4, will likely play in the tournament, Ray said. The tournament will include pool play followed by elimination games, Ray said.
District 4 hosted the Junior Baseball Western Regional in 2001 at Propstra Stadium. But that was only a four-team tournament. The format has since changed to include the championship teams for all 11 states in the Western Region.
Ray and his staff of volunteers hosted the Little League Softball Western Regional for seven years from 2004 through 2010. That tournament moved to San Bernardino, Calif., in 2011.
Locals complete NYC marathon
At least 11 runners from Southwest Washington completed the New York City Marathon on Sunday.
Brush Prairie native Sarah Porter led local participants. In her first race as a professional, the Hockinson High graduate was the 22nd woman across the finish line, and placed 233rd overall, with a time of 2 hours, 44 minutes and 25 seconds. Cory Cochran of Vancouver was the other area runner to break three hours, finishing number 915 with a time of 2:58:08.

VLC rowers place in Seattle
Rowers from Vancouver Lake Crew participated in the popular Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday at the University of Washington in Seattle.
In the men’s collegiate/open double race, Brent Eastes and David Pervere of VLC took third place out of 11 entries with a time of 20 minutes and 15 seconds. The races were three miles, starting on Lake Union and ending on Lake Washington. There were 344 entries representing 64 rowing clubs from 10 states.
The VLC girls eight took eighth place among 14 entries with a time of 21:42. In that boat were rowers Sawyer Schultz, Kristina Metz, Jessie Horn, Corinna Niebur, Meera Gregerson, Kari Hampson, Katherine Borchers and Katie Hickey, and coxswain Giselle Kiraly.
The VLC boys eight took ninth place with a time of 20:42. In that boat were coxswain Courtney McGourty and rowers Oscar Golberg, Joe Querin, Sean Sowul, Brady Schmitt, John Lockwood, Oliver Niebur, Zach Greenen and Deryk Ahner.
Four men from VLC finished fourth in the men’s masters quad race with a time of 23:17. Rowing in that boat were Tom Leonardi, Ben Walsh, Caleb Winter and Ken Canavarro.
CCYF champions crowned
Clark County Youth Football wrapped up its 29th season on Saturday with five championship games at Washougal High School’s Fishback Stadium.
In the eighth-grade championship, the Hockinson Hawks beat the East Vancouver Thunder 12-8. Thunder players are from the east part of the Evergreen School District.
The seventh-grade championship featured two East Vancouver teams, with the Wolves from the north part of the Evergreen School District beating the Thunder from the eastern part of Evergreen School District 32-20.
In the sixth-grade title game, the East Vancouver Titans from the east section of Evergreen School District beat the Battle Ground Tigers 35-0.
In the championship game for grades 4-5, the West Vancouver Bears from Salmon Creek beat the Hockinson Hawks 32-6.
In the title game for grades 2-3, the Kalama/Woodland Chinooks beat the East Vancouver Cougars from the east section of Evergreen School District 12-7.
Pop Warner champions
Several area Pop Warner football teams earned berths in regional playoffs with wins on Sunday at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas.
In the Junior Pee Wee Division for ages 8-10, Evergreen beat Cowlitz 6-0 for the local championship and will represent Southwest Washington in the first round of the Pop Warner Division 2 playoffs on Nov. 19-20 in Santa Clara, Calif. East County beat North County 19-0 in the third-place game and will travel to Santa Clara for the Division 3 regional tournament.
In the Pee Wee Division for ages 9-11, Cowlitz beat Evergreen 6-0 for first place and a berth in the regional playoffs at Santa Clara. North County defeated Evergreen 37-7 for third place, but will not travel to the regionals.
In the Junior Midget Division for ages 10-12, North County beat Portland 32-10 for first place. Vancouver beat East County 12-6 for third place. None of the Junior Midget teams will go to regional playoffs.
Cascade Little League fundraiser
Cascade Little League is hosting an obstacle course race to raise funds for field maintenance and upgrades at the Harmony Sports Complex.
The Dirty for Turkey Obstacle Race will be held between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the complex, 1500 N.E. 192nd Ave.
The family division will be for five-member teams. A 16-and-younger division will be for teams of up to five youths.
