Kavita Battan scored the game’s only goal and the Hockinson defense did the rest as the Hawks beat Mark Morris 1-0 Saturday to clinch their sixth consecutive trip to the Class 2A state playoffs.

“The key was our defense, led by Caity Kuntz, did a great job of getting a second straight shutout in the playoffs,” Hockinson coach Vic Oenning said. “That’s what you need. It’s up to your offense to get the ball into the net. The defense put us in position to win both games.”

Hockinson lost to W.F. West on Tuesday, putting the Hawks into the loser-out bracket. Hockinson beat Centralia 2-0 on Thursday to set up Saturday’s match.

Battan took a pass from Aurora Bodenhamer with 18 minutes to play in the match and scored.

“The thing with Kavita is she can be double-teamed or triple-teamed and she can still find a way to get a shot off.”

Hockinson will travel to play Sumner on Tuesday or Wednesday in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament.
