Vancouver — The city of Vancouver is hosting an event Nov. 12 to celebrate and recognize the vital contributions of Native Americans to the community.

Hands-on family activities and a student art show offer a connection to the canoe cultures of our region from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Water Resources Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way.

The free event includes opportunities to: Learn about different canoe and paddle styles while designing and making your own paper canoe and miniature paddle; construct and paint a small hoop drum and drum beater out of simple materials; fashion canoe jewelry out of beads and safety pins; twist plants into cordage to use for string; break nuts and pound into “mash” to see the extensive effort needed to feed the tribe.

This year, the Water Center worked with the Journeys in Creativity Program at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts to showcase model canoes, paddles and painted drums designed and carved by students, the city said in a news bulletin.

Throughout the month of November, the artwork and words of the students explaining their heritage and design choices will be on display.

The art show and Second Saturday crafts both illustrate the importance of canoes to native peoples, who depended on them for transportation, fishing and food harvesting, the city said.
