The tsunami has slowed to a relative trickle — well, a trickle about the size of the Columbia River. And along the way, ESPN has learned a valuable lesson in the power of the masses.
When ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson wrote a column Sunday about the Broncos’ future with Tim Tebow, commenters started listing things that are greater than the Denver quarterback. Stuff like “Jerry Jones’ facelift > Tebow” and “Tiger Woods’ marriage > Tebow” and “Flo from Progressive > Tebow.” Many of them were funny; many were vulgar. But when the ESPN.com moderators started removing some posts, an “OccupyTebow” movement was born and the Internet blew up.
Wednesday night — three days after the column appeared — there were more than 100 posts per minute. By Thursday evening, it had slowed to about 25 posts per minute. ESPN.com’s counter stopped at 5,000, so it will probably be some time before we learn how many thousands upon thousands of posts there have been.
As one commenter wrote, “Going stronger than ever to show ESPN moderators who’s boss > Tebow.” Power to the people.
