Pleasant Valley — Two Pleasant Valley Middle School students won first place for a Group Documentary in the Washington History Day state competition, earning them a trip to compete nationally in June. Jessi Shelton and Mercedes McLeod won the Group Documentary division for middle school and junior high students. For their documentary, the girls studied, recorded interviews, and copied historic photos and documents into a 10-minute narrated video, “The Treaty of Neah Bay 1855: Created by Diplomacy, Destroyed by Debate.” The video examines whaling history off the Washington Coast and the birth, life and death of the 1855 treaty with the Makah Indians.
