Letter: Turbines better suited elsewhere

The Columbian
Published: May 13, 2011, 12:00am

Wind energy projects should be an important part of our energy future, but poorly planned projects like Whistling Ridge should not be allowed. The project proposed for the Underwood area in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area will be visible from key viewing areas from both Oregon and Washington. The developers claim that because it is outside the scenic area, the wind turbines should be allowed. If you can see the turbines from the Gorge, then it is in the scenic area.

The Willard-Underwood area is an emerging agricultural tourism economy and this growth would be negatively affected by a large industrial complex. There are many locations in the state that are better suited for a wind projects that will not have the impact that Whistling Ridge will have on the scenic beauty of the Columbia River Gorge. As a resident of the scenic area, I urge the site evaluation council to reconsider this application. Write to Gov. Chris Gregoire and ask her to deny the project.
