SEATTLE (AP) — The King County sheriff’s office says it has a person of interest in the 2001 killing of a real estate agent at a house in Woodinville.

That person of interest is now dead. But sheriff’s Sgt. John Urquhart said Thursday the death of agent Mike Emert is still under investigation.

The development in the case was first reported by KIRO-TV as part of its investigation of former Seattle police officer Gary Krueger who retired from the force in 1980. Krueger pleaded guilty to bank robbery in 2001 and eventually provided a DNA sample that wasn’t entered into the police database until 2010 due to a backlog.

Last September, Urquhart says, Krueger was matched with DNA from Emert’s killing. By that time Krueger had been dead six months. He drowned in Lake Washington.
