Dogs and cats need community’s support

The West Columbia Gorge Humane Society has been an integral part of the local community for many years. Despite having to deal with a number of financial ups and downs over the years, this vital organization has continued to survive, and maintain its focus of helping care for and find home for dogs, cats and other domestic pets that are often times unwanted, lost or carelessly discarded.

Take 5-month-old Nemo, for example. The gray and white kitten was brought to the Washougal shelter after being involved in a car accident where he suffered numerous injuries including a fractured rear leg, cracked rib, and lung and kidney damage. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save his rear leg, but he is adapting well to his life on three limbs.

Then there’s Linus, Zorro and Zena, puppies who were found in the woods, struggling to survive. They were brought to the WCGHS shelter, where staff have been nursing them back to health.

Caring for these and all of the other animals that cross the WCGHS’s path would not be possible without the dedication of volunteers and financial contributions from the public. A fund raiser to help support all of the good this organization does will be held Saturday.

As detailed in today’s Post-Record, the third annual “Hike on the Dike” will include food, pet products and services booths and a children’s activity area. There will also be an open house at the cat shelter, a police K-9 demonstration and a parade featuring shelter dogs.

So, take a few hours to support the work of the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society, an organization that cares for our community’s smallest creatures who often have no where else to turn.
