Salmon Creek — The flapjacks at a March 12 “Freedom Flapjack Breakfast” weren’t actually free. But the $7 tickets to the fund-raising event at Applebee’s on Northeast Highway 99 did support a good cause — the new nonprofit Clark County Veterans Assistance Center, a support and drop-in facility at1305 Columbia St.

Elvis, Uncle Sam and many local dignitaries and neighborhood organizers were on hand. There were 192 people in attendance, and approximately $2,300 was raised with more still coming in, according to John Russell, chairman of the CCVAC board.

“I, as a Vietnam Combat Veteran, am awed at the hours put into this project by members of the community,” Russell said. “The people here in Clark County can take pride in their involvement and ownership of the Center.”

Milada Allen of the Felida Neighborhood Association is serving as CCVAC’s executive director.
