Salmon Creek teams win two soccer titles

Boca Juniors boys claim U-18, U-15 tournaments

Sunday was doubly satisfying for the Salmon Creek Select Soccer Club.

Two of the club’s teams claimed state titles as Washington Youth Soccer wrapped up its Founder’s Cup tournament at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

Salmon Creek Select Soccer Boca Juniors boys teams won titles in the under-15 and under-18 divisions. Both teams beat fellow Clark County clubs in the finals.

The Founder’s Cup — formerly called the Commissioner’s Cup — is the developmental-level state tournament for advanced competition soccer teams. Founder’s Cup champions do not advance beyond this tournament.

Five teams from Columbia Youth Soccer Federation clubs lost in Saturday’s semifinal matches.

Here are weekend highlights provided by some of the teams:

Boys under 18 — Nate Coleman, Miller Grening, Matt Newman, and Chris Mattos converted tie-breaker penalty kicks to lift Boca Juniors past the VUSA Avalanche after the Clark County sides battled through 120 scoreless minutes. The Avalanche made two of its first four penalty kicks.

Newman played in goal for much of the match and during the shootout after starting goalkeeper Tyson Wright injured his shoulder in the 13th minute.

In the semifinals on Saturday, Newman posted a shutout in a 3-0 win over a team from Kent. Connor Lien opened the scoring for SCSC, and Conor McDaid-O’Neill added two goals.

Members of the champion Salmon Creek Boca Juniors were Coleman, Grening, Lien, McDaid-O’Neill, Newman, Cameron Goddard, Andrew Graham, Wright, Nigel Cosme, Christopher McCarthy, Kevin Jaco, Axel Ledesma, Brayan Benitez, Christopher Mattos, Trevor Ellis, Andrew Mattos and Taylor Enghusen. The head coach was Barrett Goddard, assisted by Cory Ellis.

The Vancouver United Avalanche advanced to the final with a 2-1 win on Saturday over the Federal Way United Thunder. Cameron Foster scored the first goal off an assist from Will Dow. The winning goal was scored by Lucas Rondon, set up by Chris Marrinan’s run out of the back.

The Avalanche allowed only one goal in tournament play.

Team members were Javier Corona, David Cardenas, Fernando Onofre, Danny Sibley, Nate Dahlstrom, Jack Cabanatuan, Dow, Marrinan, Brad Harder, Courtney Hewett, Mehdi Berrisoul, Robert Long, Michael Dyra, Mark Williams, Foster, Rondon, Dan Ruiz, and Dallon Powers. The head coach was Brad Dow, assisted by Victor Morales and Scott Foster.

Boys under-15 — Garrett Bredy scored all four goals as the Salmon Creek Select Boca Juniors claimed the state title in their first season together. Bredy’s goal with about 10 minutes left on Saturday earned the team a 1-0 semifinal victory over Newport FC.

In the 3-1 win over WSA Extreme in the finals, Bredy scored in the fourth and 12th minutes for an early 2-0 lead, and added a second-half goal. Blake Greeley assisted on the two first-half goals, and Eric Ferris assisted on the third goal.

Players for the under-15 Boca Juniors were Galen Bishop, Sam Rivas, Brandon Zilles, Luis Garcia, Eric Ferris, Bryan McCarthy, Jason Dorsey, Brennan McDaid-O’Neill, David Potter, Aaron Bode, Geirsen Kalhagen, Christian Fernandez, Garrett Bredy, Ryan Quick, Nic Peery, Blake Greeley, and Alix Reohr. The team was coached by Mike McCarthy, who was assisted by Barrett Goddard and Cory Ellis from the under-18 coaching staff.

Washington Soccer Academy Extreme reached the finals with a 4-1 win on Saturday. Details from that match, and the WSA roster, were not available.

Girls under-16 — The Federal Way Lightning defeated the Pacific FC Ice, 3-1, in Sunday’s title match. All but three members of the Ice are young for this age group, according to head coach Barbara Corigliano.

The Ice goalkeeper was Desiree Senger-Mills. Playing defense were Kelsey McVicker, Peyton Merringer, Michel Berry, Madison Barr, Sydnie Cole, Chandler Charles and Sayo Littler. Goal scorers in this tournament were Chelsea Borgelt-Breault, Sydney Thompson, Gabrielle Burrell and Mikayla Meisner. The midfielders were Maya Nicol, Alissa Corigliano, Elizabeth Larson, Brandie Stegall, and Hannah Diffoot.

Corigliano was assisted by Jason Meisner. Tyniel Thompson was the team’s manager.

Girls under-14 — Mercer Island FC defeated the Pacific FC Vipers 3-2 in the finals. The Vipers reached the finals with a 4-0 win on Saturday. Details from those matches were not available.

Mercer Island reached the finals by defeating the Vancouver United Heartbreakers, 2-0, on Saturday. The Heartbreakers players were Mikaela Williams, Samantha Tipton, Christina Elliott, Tayler Troupe, Jaycie LeBle’, Nicole Carlson, Emma Martin, Rachel Rand, Heather Deulen, Lauren Terry, Katharine Williams, Madeline Braun, Alicia Stark, Nicole Cruz, Jing Murray, Megan Waller, and Alexis Fuller. The head coach was Zoe Ann Williams, assisted by Michael Williams, Larry Petersen and Nicole Frank.

Girls under-13 — The Chinook Ice lost 2-1 loss to Crossfire in Sunday’s finals. It was only the team’s second loss this season. The Chinook defense allowed no goals during State Cup play until Saturday’s semifinal game, where Chinook defeated the Seattle United Comets in double overtime with goals by Alexis Nolan, Cori Murray and Lexi Becker.

Chinook Ice won the under-13 Portland Metro League title. The players were Leah Aspinwall, Becker, Alissa Cash, Ali Graham, Sierra Hunting, Brooke Linde, Murray, Jasmine Nesbitt, Nolan, Madison Ochoa, Molli Reading, Robin Rose, Mckenzie Schaller, Kari Staples, Rachel Willson, and Monica Wolfe. The coach was Dick Burgess, assisted by Mark Schaller. The team manager was Donna Hunting.

Girls under-11 — Crossfire Select beat Pacific FC 99 Blue 2-0 in Saturday’s semifinals, scoring twice in the second half. Pacific FC Blue was the only under-11 team from Southwest Washington to reach the semifinals. Crossfire Select won the championship on Sunday.

Players for Pacific FC Blue were Grace Russell, Ally Findlay, Krystal Kaufman, Tessa White, Megan Roscoe, Jennifer Baertlein, Sally Houk, Rylie Krout, Trinity Paulsen, Brianna Grosz, Gaby Justus, Chelsea Miracle, and Hayden Smith.

Other area teams that lost in Founder’s Cup semifinal matches on Saturday were the Chinook Fire boys under-16, and the VUSA Blitz girls under-15. Details from those matches were not reported.

Challenge Cup

Boys under-15 — The VSUS Timbers Red beat Sun City Strikers-Lamas 2-0 to advance to the semifinals of the intermediate advanced-competition state tournament.

Boys under-17 — The VSUS Timbers Blue beat Black Hills FC 2-1 on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the intermediate advanced-competition state tournament.

Boys under-18 — Seattle United Copa 2 beat the VUSA Timbers Red in a penalty-kick tiebreaker on Sunday in the state quarterfinals. The teams played to a 1-1 draw before the shootout.

Championship Cup

Boys under-17 — The Vancouver United Timbers Red moved into the semifinals of the top-level state tournament with a 3-0 victory over a Crossfire Premier team on Saturday.

Washington ODP

Two players from Southwest Washington — Marshal Hartley and James Nosack — are on the Washington Youth Soccer team that recently won the Far West Region championship for boys born in 1995. The team will participate in the national tournament in early March in Phoenix.
