Talking Points: Mariners should not consider some deals

Yahoo Sports reports the Mariners are getting a lot of interest in closer Brandon League. League is heading into his final arbitration season in 2012 and likely to make around $4.5 million to return to Seattle. It means Seattle might have just one chance to get some real value for him in a trade. So far, the Reds, Red Sox, Dodgers and Angels are reportedly interested in League.

But this puts the M’s in a difficult position.

If the Mariners are sincere about pursuing free agent first baseman Prince Fielder then they cannot trade League in the immediate future. Keeping assets on the current roster is a requirement to bring in big names like Fielder, and trading away an All-Star closer does not show that to the available free agents.
