Talking Points: Passing thought on passing record

We think the world of Drew Brees. We could not think of a nicer guy to break a long-standing NFL passing record.

So please do not take this as an assault on the new record. Just simply an opinion based on the numbers:

It is too easy to pass these days in the NFL.

For years, quarterbacks were protected more than other players for obvious reasons. But now, the league has gone too far with some of the limitations it puts on defenders. So QBs are more comfortable now.

Receivers have more protection now, as well. No more head-hunting for defensive backs. That’s a great rule change, but at the same time, officials need to understand the difference between head hunting and accidental collisions in a violent game.

Teams are passing more than in previous seasons because they know they will pick up penalties, or their receivers will be more open than in the past because defenders are too timid to defend.

The NFL loves offense. They think fans want more and more points, more and more records to fall.

Fans just want quality football games. We can handle a close, low-scoring game. What we don’t want is all the QBs and WRs putting up video game stats week in and week out against defenses that have been stretched too thin with too many rules and penalties.
