Northeast Hazel Dell — Local children in the Red Cross Youth Council baked more than 1,000 cookies for active overseas U.S. military personnel and local veterans. The 13 kids baked, decorated and packaged more than 107 dozen cookies on Dec. 11 at the home of Eden Behrens, one of the youth council members. Her mother, Laura, also helped with mixing and baking. The cookies were sent to military members serving at two Marine Corps bases, including one in Okinawa, Japan, and two Air Force bases in Afghanistan. The students also wrote Christmas letters and created a video thanking the troops for their service. Cookies were also delivered to patients at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Vancouver.
