Talking Points: Barry Bonds got off easy

The Columbian

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

If making misleading remarks in front of a grand jury lands you 30 days confinement in Barry Bonds’ 15,000-square foot home in Beverly Hills, Talking Points wants to find the nearest bailiff to swear us in.

After more than eight years of chasing down baseball’s home run king, that’s what the prosecution finally got in the Barry Bonds obstruction of justice penalty phase.

Bonds received 30 days of home confinement, a $4,000 fine (Bonds probably paid more for the lunch tab for his team of attorneys), two years of probation and 250 hours of community service.

The prosecution had sought 15 months in prison and argued that home confinement wasn’t punishment enough “for a man with a 15,000-square-foot house with all the advantages.” Bonds lives in a six-bedroom, 10-bath house with a gym and swimming pool.

The prosecution called the $4,000 fine “almost laughable.”

Almost? It is totally laughable. Almost as laughable as the prosecution spending eight years and countless taxpayer money to end with this result.

Oh, and Bonds doesn’t have to start serving a day or pay a cent or pick up a bit of garbage until after his attorneys appeal the decision Friday, which could take as long as 17 months.

Are you ready for almost a month’s worth of college football bowl games?

Ready or not, the bowl season begins Saturday with three high-quality games: the New Mexico Bowl, the New Orleans Bowl and the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The latter begs the question: If Idaho potatoes are so famous, why do they need to sponsor a bowl game between Ohio and Utah State?
