Ask the gardening expert

The leaves in my garden are still clinging to the trees and shrubs. Several years ago, we had a wet snow, and the weight of it broke many plants. Do you know of anything I can do to make the leaves come off in the event of another snowstorm?

I’ve never had this question before, so I congratulate you on originality. However, I really don’t think there is much you or I could do to make the leaves fall.

You could grab branches and shake, but I can’t imagine much benefit other than the aerobic exercise you’d get.

Since I received your email, there have been several wet, windy rainstorms come through my area — yours, too, I assume — and the leaves came thundering down. A good share of the small trees and shrubs are finally bare. A good thing! Maybe we’ve dodged a bullet this year.
