Weight-loss challenge means big gains for Legacy participants

Salmon Creek — More than 150 Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center employees and volunteers took part in a 16-week weight-loss challenge that ended in August. Three top individuals and three top teams earned cash prizes for their efforts. Two participants earned $50 gift certificates at Fit Right NW for their testimonials about the challenge. Winning wasn’t only about weight loss. Participants also used the challenge — which featured brown-bag sessions on diet and exercise — to work on changing habits and choices. Carmen Fillis, a diet aide in the Food and Nutrition Department at Legacy, used the four-month challenge to boost an ongoing health campaign. Fillis quit smoking in August 2010, ending a 20-year habit, and has spent the past year working on making healthier food choices. Fillis had lost 20 pounds going in to the weight-loss challenge, and dropped 14 more during the challenge. Fillis was one of the Fit Right NW gift certificate winners. “I hope my story encourages others to find ways to make their lives healthier, so they, too, can begin feeling great,” Fillis said.
